Check these before you buy a pump

A booster pump raises pressure. It does not remove restrictions. Every one of the following causes low pressure and none of them is solved by a pump — some are made worse by one.

A partly closed valve

The main shutoff or the meter valve not fully open. Free to check, and it is the cause more often than people expect — particularly after recent plumbing work.

A failed pressure-reducing valve

PRVs fail gradually and typically last 10–15 years. Replacement runs $350–$700 — a fraction of a booster system, and the correct fix when the PRV is the problem.

Scaled or corroded supply pipe

Old galvanised pipe narrows internally with scale. Pushing more pressure through a restricted line increases velocity and wear without meaningfully improving flow at the fixture. Repiping is the real fix.

Undersized service line

A ½-inch service feeding a house that needs ¾ or 1 inch limits flow regardless of pressure. Upsizing the service line addresses the cause; a pump masks it.

How this calculator works

Equipment cost comes from the capacity band you select, uplifted for commercial-duty gear and scaled slightly by fixture count, since systems serving many fixtures need more control equipment than the band alone implies. Labour is calculated from base hours — seven for a new installation, three for a replacement — at licensed plumber rates, adjusted for access difficulty and system scope.

Electrical, pipework modification and permits are separate line items so you can see what a “pump only” quote is leaving out. The replacement comparison figure re-prices the same equipment using replacement labour, which is what makes it directly comparable.
