Wood Paneling Removal Cost Calculator
Removing wood paneling costs $1.25–$3 per square foot. Repairing the wall behind it costs more than the removal does — and until you pull a panel, you do not know which wall you have. Enter your room below for a range that includes both.
How much does it cost to remove wood paneling?
Expect $3.50–$9 per square foot of wall for removal, wall repair and paint together — around $1,400–$3,200 for a typical 12×14 ft room panelled on all four walls. Removal on its own is only $1.25–$3 per square foot; the rest depends on whether there is sound drywall behind the panels.

Your estimate
Worth checking first
- Glued paneling usually tears the drywall face when removed. Budget for a skim coat even if the wall looks sound before you start.
- Pull one panel in a corner first. What is behind it changes this estimate more than anything else on the form.
Remove one panel before booking work. Knowing whether the wall behind is sound drywall or bare studs is the difference between the low and high end of this range.

Pull one panel before you budget
This is the single most useful thing you can do before getting quotes. Pick an inconspicuous corner, work a pry bar behind the panel and take one piece off. Five minutes of work tells you the two things that decide your entire budget:
- Is there drywall behind it? Sound drywall means patch and paint. Bare studs mean you are buying a drywall installation, roughly tripling the cost per square foot.
- How is it fixed? If the panel lifts away with nails still in it, you are in the cheap case. If it comes off in pieces with drywall paper stuck to the back, it is glued, and you should budget for a skim coat across every panelled wall.
A contractor pricing the job without knowing these things has to quote defensively, which is why quotes for paneling removal vary so widely. Give them the answer and the quotes tighten up considerably.
Removal is not the only option
Paint it. Around $2–$4 per square foot. Clean thoroughly, use a bonding primer, and fill the vertical grooves with joint compound if you want a flat wall. It is the cheapest route and reversible later.
Drywall over it. Around $4–$6 per square foot. Avoids the strip-out and any lead-paint disturbance, but the wall gets half an inch thicker, so outlets, switches, door casings and window returns all need extending. Budget for that work — it is usually what makes this option cost more than it first appears.
Remove it. The right call when the paneling is damaged, when you want the room back to its original wall line, or when you suspect the paneling is hiding moisture or pest damage that needs inspecting.
How this calculator works
Panelled wall area is derived from your room dimensions, wall height, the number of panelled walls and the coverage fraction you select — a wainscot counts as about a third of the wall, not all of it. That area then drives four separate lines: removal labour, wall repair and finish, trim, and disposal.
Where you have selected “I do not know yet” for the fixing method or the wall behind, the calculator prices the midpoint rather than the best case, and widens the range. It deliberately does not assume the cheap outcome on your behalf.
A single regional labour adjustment is applied from your ZIP code. All figures are national-average based estimates, not quotes.
